The Thornton residential community development is located north of the Penrith CBD, adjoining the Penrith train station. Previously belonging to the Australian Defence Force, the site was rezoned to allow for a residential, commercial and transit orientated development. In June 2010, Landcom commissioned PDG to prepare a landscape vision and master plan for the development, representing an opportunity for a significant and progressive approach to urban design, new architectural typologies and landscape design. The landscape vision centered around the creation of a sustainable, high quality urban village with a strong sense of place and community inspired by the influences of the site’s local heritage. The development contains a high level of community amenity provided by a variety of open space options and locations. With a core design focus on delivering innovative WSUD through storm water movement, treatment and storage, interpretive art works and leafy village like streetscapes to deliver a sequence of vibrant public spaces that both engages and activates the community.
